28/01/2018 Not a good Sunday!!!!

Floods but not what you would expect with all the rain we have had. We sleep upstairs in winter because it is warmer. N walked down this morning and I suddenly heard a few explosive words. The passage, both bathrooms and our main bedroom were under about 4 cms (2 inches) of water. Thank goodness for an old house and a floor that is not level, the lounge was dry and the kitchen is up a couple of steps. The whole day has been spent mopping up and drying. Small carpets floating, curtains sucking up water. The very old velvet bedspread on our bed in the main room touches the floor all round! Under the bed everything was stored in boxes!!!!!!!! The bottom of the built in wardrobe also was under water. Nightmare day. The guilty party see below - a burst pipe to the basin in the bathroom. Many photos taken for insurance purposes if necessary. We are both worn out.
 The burst pipe.

The passage...

As above

The bathroom where  it all began!

The second bathroom.

The built in cupboard in the bedroom.

Last nights sunset.

  1. Oh no! What a pain. We had the same thing happen under our kitchen sink in France. Luckily we were in at the time so water only gushed out for a couple of minutes before we were able to turn off the water and start mopping.
I really feel for you as it isn't really the time of year when things dry out more easily.
Thinking of you and bon courage... x

    1. Last time this happened her it was a hail storm at night, broken tiles and the electricity went off; I was here alone!!! At least there was two of us this time. xx

  2. Such a terrible thing to happen! I'm so sorry, Diane. This happened to me as a young bride; we lived upstairs and the apartment below was damaged as well. Not a fun thing!

    Take care.

  4. I can only hope for you that the damage is minimal. On the bright side at least you didn't float away.

  5. What a bummer. You have my deepest sympathy. Water can be so damaging and looks like you had more than your share in places where you didn't want It. Hope the insurance company doesn’t give you the runaround.

    1. I do not anticipate problems with the insurance company, they were were very good the last claim we made when we had broken roof tiles and floods from a massive hail storm. Thanks goodness we have tiled floors but the bottoms of the doors and the bathroom cabinet are not looking good! Hope all well there. Diane

  6. Sacre bleu! How awful Diane, what a nightmare to wake up to! Hopefully your insurance will cover any major damage, it's the mess and precious things ruined that's the worst thing!

    1. Some of the things that are damaged cannot be replaced - memories all stored under the bed in cases and boxes. The rest I am sure the insurance company will not quibble over. Keep well Diane

    2. I saw the doctor yesterday and he thinks the cough is a reflux thing, apparently I have a small hiatus hernia.. have tabs to take which as yet are not working! How about you, is your cough any better?

    3. No sadly the cough is no better. I know from experience that it lingers on and on, I have always had a problem but this is possibly a worse cough!!! They told me years ago possibly a reflux thing, think that is a standard answer to something they cannot fix!! Diane

  7. Hi Diane. Mopping up flood water is dreadful. I had nearly a weeks work of it after the tropical cyclone that hit Durban last October. Thinking of you, and hope that your week gets better. Kim

    1. This the second time here. Last time was about 11 years a go when a massive hail storm broke 14 roof tiles and I was flooded in the middle of the night and no electricity. All the ceilings had to be redone that time as well!! I was on my own. N was in the UK !! Keep well Diane

  8. Oh not! That is definitely not something I'd want to wake up to!

  9. Oh dear! What a thing to greet you first thing in the early morning! Besides the damage to the wood items, you have to do all the shifting of things and mopping up all the water. I do hope the insurance company will pay for the damage.

    1. Most of it is not a huge problem. Swollen wood can be replaced. My special cards and letters that I have valued for years in my writing case cannot be replaced :-( Cheers Diane
